The mission of Student Research Week (SRW) is to recognize and celebrate student research at Texas A&M University by providing an opportunity for students to present research and to foster an environment for students, faculty, staff and administration to learn about the research occurring at Texas A&M University and the resources available on campus.

The goal of Student Research Week is to promote understanding and communication about research among disciplines, as well as to the public, thereby promoting a positive university research environment. SRW also aims to highlight the excellence and broad range of research occurring within the University community.

The Office of Graduate Studies, Vice President for Research, Department of Student Life, Undergraduate Programs & Academic Services, Academic Colleges, administrators, faculty, staff, and students collaborate with the GSC to ensure that SRW is a continual success.

Students

In 2006, 526 graduate and undergraduate students representing all academic colleges, the Galveston campus, the College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Health Sciences Center participated in oral presentation and poster competitions. An additional 50 students volunteered during SRW 2006 and many other students attended sessions to learn about research or support their peers. Student visitors from our Qatar campus also attended oral and poster presentations.

Every student competitor received a T-shirt and certificate of participation. Two-hundred and nine (209) research competitors were awarded first (51), second (53), third (54), and fourth (51) place prizes. Students were also recognized with ribbon designations for accomplishments in areas such as Interdisciplinary Research and International Research. Assessment results conveyed that students felt the prizes motivated them to complete and improve their research presentations and rewarded them for their hard work.

Additionally, 89% of the student survey respondents felt SRW provided them with a supportive/constructive environment in which to present their research. Eighty-six percent (86%) of the student survey respondents indicated that SRW allowed them to participate in a research conference this year. Ninety (90%) of students reported they would participate again and 93% would encourage friends to participate.

Faculty and Staff

Each year, approximately 150 faculty, staff, and graduate students volunteer as judges for SRW. Faculty members also play an integral role in encouraging their students to present research or attend events. According to 2006 survey results, 98% of the judges felt SRW contributes to students’ overall learning and development. A faculty member explained, " I think it is important to encourage students to achieve; as a research institution, facilitating their involvement in research is critical." One hundred percent (100%) of the judges enjoyed interacting with students and talking to them about their research. One judge commented, "this is a terrific program. I think it is one of the most important things students can get involved in at Texas A&M."

Facilitating Interaction

Survey results conveyed that 99% of the judges and 87% of the students felt SRW provides an opportunity to learn more about student research occurring at Texas A&M. One faculty member explained, "my favorite aspect of SRW 2006 was definitely the opportunity to interact with others on an interdisciplinary level." A student wrote " I enjoyed seeing all the other research projects being completed ... It broadened my understanding of what types of research are taking place at Texas A&M...I was unaware that research was conducted in such a vast array of different subjects."
